EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS
Marina da Silva
I woke up lazy and still in bed I decided to look at the news on my cell phone and found myself reading this headline: "Lead actor ofEverybody Hates Chris complains about Brazilian fans. Tyler James Williams complained about the amount of comments he received in his internet posts 18/09/2021"1 I was intrigued and decided to read the article and found that actor does not understand why EVERYONE LOVES CHRIS in Brazil. "I love Brazil, you guys are amazing, but I don't know what's going on there, it's very confusing," he declared.
Of course it's confusing! There are millions of people, counting only the fans in Brazil, who like, follow, troll and send messages to Chris, ops, Tyller James Williams, the interpreter of the character beloved by fans of the series and by osmosis, "elementary my dear Watson ", like the actor. I watched the series at the beginning of the first decade of the 21st century with my preteen daughter, who, by the way, loved Everyone hates Chris. My favorite character was her mother Rochelle. Before we go any further, let's get to the basics:
Everyone Hates Crhis is an "American biographical and dramatic comedy sitcom aired by CBS between September 22, 2005 and May 8, 2009. Inspired by the personal experiences of actor and comedian Chris Rock in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of New York during the 1980s (1982 to 1987), however Rock's real adolescence took place between 1978 and 1984. The series stars Tyler James Williams and the cast principal formed by Terry Crews, Tichina Arnold, Tequan Richmond, Imani Hakim, Vincent Martella[2] and narrated by an adult Chris Rock;"2
Actor Tyller James Williams' confusion is explainable and intelligible, but he needs to work a little harder. Probably, and he confesses, the love-hate relationship with Brazilian fans irritates him because it smacks of fanaticism and Americans, even before the terrorist attack on American soil on September 11, 2001, they see terrorists everywhere, persecution and bullying potentiated through the internet and the emergence of social networks in this century. But all this fear and confusion is the result of their little knowledge, ignorance and arrogance about Brazil and the Brazilian people. "I don't know what happens there", confesses Tyller J. Williams and this lack of knowledge comes from the arrogance of the United States over the rest of the nations of the planet. And it's not me who says this, but Paul Kennedy, a British historian who makes a warning in the 1990s and points out as a weakness the poor education in the United States in the book Preparing for the 21st century.3 In comparative tests between American students and students of the Japan, South Korea and the New Industrialized Nations - NIC's (from Southeast Asia), students from the United States were badly beaten and only not worse in Mathematics because they were regrettable in History and Geography. The author says that the Americans did not know anything about history and could not even point to Iraq on the world map, but they supported almost unanimously the two wars against that country.
If the comparative study included Brazil, Brazilian students would probably put on a show in the US. And this is because in Brazil, Geography and History are part of the teaching curriculum from Basic and under strong influence from Europe. In the 21st century, especially in Lulism or the PT government (two terms of Lula and two terms of Dilma Rousseff, the latter usurped with a fake impeachment by pedaling) besides removing millions of Brazilians from extreme poverty and misery (some 50 million people) , Lulism invested heavily in Technical Education and Higher Education, which angered both The elite of Delay 4 and the rancorous, racist, slavery middle class attached to Casa Grande, always placing blacks back in the Senzala.5 Soon after the proclamation of independence of Brazil from Portugal in 1822, the United States declared loud and clear in the Monroe Doctrine: "The Monroe Doctrine was instituted in 1823 by US President James Monroe. It established European non-interference on the American continent."6 To America , The americans! For a good connoisseur of geopolitics and the global balance of power, uncle SAM warned that he would not tolerate meddling in the American continent and to show that he was not kidding, he adopted the Big Stick policy and applied it severely throughout the 20th century, demarcating territory and preventing advance of the Soviets, imposing cruel, bloodthirsty and murderous dictatorships in all Latin nations with the excuse of protecting the capitalists from the communists. After World War II the world was divided into two blocks: USA (capitalist) X USSR (communist). Brazil and all countries in the Americas are "living space" for US imperialism. So, from the height of his arrogance and ignorance, actor Tyller James Williams has the luxury of saying he doesn't know what's going on in Brazil,7 because Brazilian fans act in such a way, looking at us like a naughty bunch of monkeys . The fact occurred in 2016 and went viral after comment on their social networks: "Actor Tyler James Williams of "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders" Joins the RE Show in Studio - 3/16/16.
Host: "What is it with all this Portuguese that we are seeing on your social networks?
Tyller: "I don't know...(...) it must be some kind of game or something they did in Brazil or something. But apparently they got it from the reruns of "Everybody hates Chris. That's it, and they keep flooding their timeline with Portuguese. It has two hundred and seventy-five thousand comments..."
Host: "What kind?"
Tyller: "Comments in Portuguese..."
Host: "On Instagram? In your photos?"
Tyller: "Yes. All in Portuguese. It could be my dog, my family..."https://youtu.be/s_B1D_VTeEQ
I graduated from Elementary School and I don't mind teaching Tyller James Williams a lesson. Come on! The first and essential information about Brazil that you are required to know is available in the second paragraph. In Brazil we speak Portuguese, this is because we were colonized by Portugal (in the US the language is English because they were colonized by the British (Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, the nation in charge, so in the US they speak English). no game, joke, championship between Brazilian fans and US series. What happens here is that since the late nineteenth century the United States has been forging and expanding its territory of geoeconomic, geostrategic and geopolitical action, colonizing and expropriating and exploring not only the Brazil's riches, as colonizing the thought, culture, art, in short, the life of the Brazilian people. The Europeans who arrived here in the Americas, especially the powers of the time Spain and Portugal, devastated the native peoples, the owners of the piece , enslaving and exterminating them. In Brazil it was no different, millions of indigenous people were enslaved (body and soul by Cia. de Jesus, Dutch, French, British Cias.), exterminated and exploited and expropriated from their lands.8 Literature, written and spoken press came to enhance the indoctrination and colonized psychosocial training of the Brazilian people: radio, cinema and television and today the internet and social networks (Orkut, Twitter, Facebook, Whats'App, Instagram , Youtube, Google, Snaptchat, Tik tok, quoting only tech giants).
Even today, in the 21st century, we are bombarded with American culture in all forms of communication. The current president, bolsonaro, racist, homophobic, misogynist, genocidal is fanatical about the United States, uses American symbols (national flag, symbols of white racial supremacy and ku Klus Klan, Nazi groups) and his voters, more than 57 million bolsonarists they ask for US interventionism, they adore Donald Trump, they dream of entering the US anyway, and of course, illegally, they are treated like mutts, they are arrested, handcuffed hand and foot and deported back like mutts. Every year, thousands of Brazilians try to enter the US in search of a better life dream paid in dollars! The United States is the Promised Land for many wretches around the world.
XXI CENTURY
The debut of Everybody hates Chris coincides with the re-election of President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2006; 2007-2010), or the moment when hope overcame fear... of the communism bullshit that justified the long dictatorship; of the return of the inflation dragon; of the return of the "uniformed cows" or military dictatorship, interrupting the neoliberal practices that, since 1994, under the command of the subservient president FHC-Fernando Henrique Cardoso, neoliberal doormat dressed as a social democrat, had dismantled the nation. A tsunami of privatization of profitable and strategic companies, deregulation of the financial market promoting gambling and speculation and bailing out banks in speculative crises (crisis of 1997), etc. It was during FHC's government that the assault, destruction and flexibilization of social rights and labor rights took place, Social Security reform, wage tightening of the civil service, lowering of middle class income, underinvestment in health (Sistema Único de Saúde-SUS) , Education, Science and Technology, Public Security and Inspection, Housing, Basic Sanitation... The neoliberal focus included privatization, outsourcing of public services, incentive/imposition of voluntary dismissals, subcontracting, exemption of capital invested in the country, maintaining interest rates skyrocketing for speculators' profits and thus earning AAA+ seal given by a mafia of disreputable, corrupted valuation companies, which later became public in the 2008 Subprime crisis: Stand&Poors; J. P. Morgan, for example.9 This process of destruction of Brazil was interrupted in the 2002 elections by the left led by the PT (two terms of Lula, two terms of Dilma Rousseff, the last being usurped with fake impeachment by pedaling). The enigma of the PT government was to create public policies aimed at the poorest, low-income, destitute population, taking them out of poverty and misery, in 2002 over 50 million Brazilians.
What Tyller James Williams knows about Brazil is the image projected abroad: banana republic, country of football and carnival, country of monkeys and mulattoes and prostitutes. The actor confesses that he knows nothing of what happens or happened here, says he is confused and probably his ignorance and confusion extends to his own country, the USA. In 2005, when the series premiered in the United States, in Brazil Lula reached the end of his first term and was running for re-election, memorable feats after having been sabotaged with lies in every attempt at election for president since the first free elections in Brazil - end of dictatorship and five-year democratic transition (1984-1989). The Brazilian population, mostly black and dark-skinned, that is, fifty shades of melanin from various indigenous and Latin American tribes, Europeans, Africans, Asians, in short, a mixture of various ethnic tribes from around the world, was with high morale for having a man from the people, a worker, northeastern, literate and with a doctorate in life as part of the people, fighting for workers in unionism and as a federal deputy, facing military dictators. It is in this state of mind of progress, finally a politician who understands the people, that the series premieres Everybody hates Chris, on TV Record (2006) and like Professor Raimundo's show Chaves e Escolinha, two highly rated comedies that have been played for years, without any change in format. TV Record hit the jackpot: a moment of valuing the poor and especially black people, which has since been repeated several times a day and fell into popular taste, used to sameness and repetition and is worth seeing from again and again and again, the same "Endless History" of Brazilian comedies that brutalize and pacify the intelligence and power of action of the poor for their rights to life and live with dignity.
In Brazil Everyone loves Chris! Why?
* First, by identifying the black color of the skin: here in Brazil "The cheapest meat on the market is my black meat"10; the drama of being black in Brazil is the "Black drama"11 of racism and genocide of the black population, especially of young black people living in favelas. Black families are the majority of residents of favelas and agglomerations (of favelas) and low-income housing and homeless people; blacks are the majority of the unemployed population, who have a low level of education, receive lower wages than white workers (mestizos or people with low melanin or light brown); blacks starve; they have the worst jobs (low qualification - civil construction and housework, especially black women, in precarious jobs in commerce and services (precariousness has a woman's face and color)12; "black without a job is restless"13 and just wants "to be happy, to walk peacefully in the favela where I was born"14 without being the target of one hundred and eleven rifle shots15 by soldiers who only care about the color of their skin, black men and women target their heads and backs:
09-12-2020 "A survey by the Security Observatory Network shows that most of the people killed by the police in Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo last year are black. Bahia presents the highest percentage: 97% of those killed in police actions were black. In the state of Pernambuco, the proportion of blacks among the victims was 93%. According to the report, police in Rio de Janeiro killed 1,814 people last year, of which 86 % were black. In Ceará, the percentage of blacks killed as a result of police intervention reached 87%. In the state of São Paulo, 63% of those killed in police actions were black." https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/ general/news/2020-12/blacks-are-most-of-the-killed-by-the-police-in-5-states-says-research
* Second: family experience in the series Everybody hates Chris. Chris and his family are for us, Brazilians from black or mestizo families, the "American dream": it is our consumption dream and universal dream, the hope of escaping the black drama, the dream of Lula who created the "New Middle Class Brazil" who had work and credit and could have three meals a day and a barbecue on the roof on the weekend!
* Third: Tyller W. James is for us the black winner, the American dream come true. It's like Barack Obama, the first black president of the superpower United States, the dream of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, even though Obama wasn't there "All This Coca-Cola";
* Chris is art imitating life and vice versa: blacks' daily struggle against structural racism rooted and ingrained in the soul by white supremacists; it's hard work, two, three days, precarious jobs;
*Tyller is the possibility of power, victory, dream come true, pole position, bronze, silver, gold medals;
* Chris is our possible dream come true at Lulism;
*Tyller is the dream come true, individual, a come-to-be;
But both Chris and Tyller are utopia, the universal dream of liberté, égalite, fraternité of the Age of Enlightenment; are the possibility of humanization; represent the dream of the struggles for Civil Rights and the struggle of women and other minorities of the 1960s violently aborted by the state assassinating the leaders of the American black movements: Martin Luther King, Fred Hampton, leaders of the Black Panthers, Malcolm-X... Whoever survived went into exile as Angela Davis. Many resisted using their public figures like Nina Simone, Cassius Clay, the Muhammad Ali.
For Brazilians Chris and his family are relief, laughter in the daily struggle, it is the possible dream put into practice by Lulismo (working parents, children at school, food on the table) and aborted with a parliamentary coup against elected president Dilma Rousseff , re-elected in 2014. Tyller James is the realization of the dream of a good life without quotas for blacks in the media, soap operas, movies, universities; it is the improvement of life without daily humiliation at work, at the club, at football, at police blitzes. No fear of the stray bullet that is aimed at the black flesh in the daily dispute between drug trafficking militias and police militias inside the favelas slaughtering and killing blacks at every "fake" incursion to protect the residents, even though there is a ban on eviction and military actions in the favelas during the Covid-19 pandemic, decreed by the Supreme Court. But Brazilians love it Everybody hates Chris; they love Will Smith in A Nutshell; they love Me, the children and the mistress; Law & Order; CSI, everything from the Discovery grid, Relic Hunters, NCIS, Cold case, House, 90 days to get married, vacation with ex and dream of the best of US UTOPIAS: "GREY'S ANATOMY", the possibility of becoming a world one day that fits everyone: blacks, Mexicans, Asians, Arabs, people of all tribes and skin color, of every creed, science, religion, living the life and beauty of living together and not each one in his square with colonized thinking by racism, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, Glbtqia+phobia! Grey's Anatomy is more successful than Chris, more for pessimism, for everything that goes wrong, for the inglorious struggles and the few happinesses and successes such as living the lives of Latin people. Deaths, incurable diseases, terrible accidents, complicated births, heart surgeries in the dark, collapses inside the hospital, gunshots, fires, an endless series of misadventures for over fifteen years on Brazilian TV. In Brazil it's living life despite...
Our black, mestizo, brown sons and daughters (mulattoes and brunettes in more than 50 shades) have a target on their head, neck, back, heart just because they have black, brown skin. Our black, black winner, King of Football, PELÉ, openly supports the racist president, who goes to TV programs to commemorate "CPF cancellation - individual registration of blacks murdered in droves every day. The mestizo and goal scorer Neymar Jr . supports the genocidal, misogynist president, suspected of crimes with the help of militiamen. The Brazilian people, the majority declare themselves black, brown, are cruelly murdered every day, 24 hours a day with the explicit support of the "Economic Elite of delay" and its tentacles within the Legislative, Executive, Judiciary, Public Ministry and the super power of the media, controlled by half a dozen families, among them the powerful Marinho family, owner of Globo Organizations. Brazilians love Chris and Tyller because our reality is George Floyd16, the black American drama since the abolition of slavery in 186317. In Brazil #blacklivesDon'tMatter #Women'sLifeDoesn'tMatter #IndigenousLifeDoesn'tMatter #SovereigntyBrasilDoesn'tMatter
Why do Brazilian fans troll, like, love, send messages to Tyller?
Because it is part of the culture here to repeat "mantras" especially of idiocy both from series and canned films (foreign) and from natives. Example: This, this, this; tell your mother, silly; (Chaves series); "And the salary, look...(Professor Raimundo's school") and Chris' speeches and jokes. Finally: I could teach you Tyller, about my Brazil, but everything is available and so easy in a googada*... And I suggest that you first learn about your country, the United States, which has such an influence on the life and death of many nations of planet Earth and maintains, on its soil, the same black drama of Brazil.18
*googlear, googada is the same as searching on Google. Uncle Google is currently "the father of the donkeys", an expression coined in Brazil when referring to the Portuguese language dictionary Aurélio
